Rhondda School Mural’s Green Warning

Rhondda schoolchildren have sent out a warning message to save the environment by designing a colourful new mural for their school.

A class full of eager Year 5 pupils from Penyrenglyn Community Primary School have been working with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Education for Sustainable Development Officer Gill Perry to investigate the environmental problems they have in their area.

Coordinated by the Council’s Environmental Services, the Where We Live project aims to uncover the good and bad aspects of the surrounding area and encourage more people to use their efforts to protect the environment in which they live.

The class found there were problems regarding litter, graffiti, flytipping and dog fouling in the Treherbert area.

Back in the classroom the youngsters then decided they would like a mural on the school showing what they liked and disliked about their area.

Local artist Jessica Pennington was commissioned to listen to the children’s concerns and help them design a suitable mural for one of the large playground walls. The pupils hoped it would encourage their friends and family to take notice and look after their environment.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Anti Litter Champion Cllr Ann Crimmings said: “The Where We Live project is an excellent way to reach out to young people and we are fully committed to ensuring they also have a voice in any developments within their community and how it affects them.

“It allows pupils to be creative and to really ‘own’ the project, to bounce ideas off each other and to contribute towards a campaign to raise awareness of issues that matter to them.

“The mural is a truly impressive piece of work and they must all be congratulated on their efforts. It helps to really capture their imagination on how they can make a positive impact on their environment – an impact that will be felt not just by them and their friends but by their children and grandchildren in years to come.”
